Chachis Story - We care and you do matter!

Chachis WE CARE and you do MATTER!!

I thought long and hard about posting about our ordeal with Chachis. Part of me thought this was too much for the general public to handle, but then again, this is reality and I feel very strongly that no matter how bad it is every one needs to be aware of what is happening to our innocent animals. Nothing will ever improve if we hide our head in the sand. There are terrible people out there doing terrible things to these precious helpless animals and we must all be aware and do something about it. When we started this blog it was to give you a glimpse into the life of rescue, as you can see there is good and there is bad, all of it part of life. This is a story about the bad.

We got a call at 9 p.m. at night on 3/18/08 from an animal control officer at an LA shelter, asking us to take Chachis, a 13 yr. old female Pug. They said she was in terrible shape. The owner had turned her into the shelter that night. We worked for hours trying to work out the logistics of getting Chachis into our care. We are used to seeing bad, but nothing prepared us for Chachis, her condition was critical and beyond deplorable. We are hoping and urging the shelter to file chargers to the person that did this to her.

One of our volunteers drove down early on the morning of 3/19 to pick up Chachis. He was truly startled and shaken when he saw her. We transported her to our Vet who was ready to give her immediate medical care. Even our Vets were extremely upset by her condition. I went to the Vets to meet her, evaluate her and talk to the Vets. Though I was warned, I too was shocked to the core. Chachis was loaded with maggots coming out of every crevice and crawling all over her. She was skin and bones and had a huge mass in her mouth that didn’t allow it to close it. Anemic, her temperature was so low that she was immediately put in an incubator. One eye was ruptured; organs were starting to shut down, skin lesions from being on cement for a long time. A terrible sight, something you don’t expect a true human being to allow to do to an animal.

After many tears and the heartbreaking decision to let her go was made. We knew no matter how much we did for her it wouldn’t be enough, she was too far gone and we didn’t want her to suffer one more minute. Chachis went peacefully with much love around her and lots of tears, surrounded by people that truly CARED for her. Our volunteers are all badly shaken by this, we see a lot, but this hit our souls so deep it will take a while to let it go. We won’t get over it, we shouldn’t as we must always remember Chachis and continue to care for others like her. For the short time we had her, we loved and honored her, we wished we had more time to get to know her, and show her how much we cared -- that she did MATTER to some one. Please if possible give a donation in honor of Chachis so we may continue to care for the many animals that are neglected and abuse. Let Chachis know her suffering will help others. Let her know she mattered!

“Our dear Chachis, we only knew you for a very short time, but you touched our hearts and we hope you felt the love we gave you and the tears that were and are been shed for you. This should not have happened to you, there are people out there that are monsters and you were own by them. We are so sorry that you were treated so badly. We did our best to save you. We know you are now in a much better place and pain free. We are sorry precious baby for what you had to endure, our hearts break for you. We love you, until we meet again, be happy and feel our love”

Absolutely wrenching. My wife and I are a mess over here. Our P & P pug is our life and we cannot comprehend such human cruelty. May Chachis story, no matter how agonizing to read, reach thousands. And may Chachis herself be painlessly and gloriously soaring through the cosmos right now. Keep up the stellar work, Tina and Pugs N' Pals. We can't wait to adopt from you again someday.

My GOD, how can someone let that happen. I do hope LA county will find cause to prosecute this aweful person. She is in a safe and painfree place playing and romping with all the puggies above.
Yes, putting this up on the blog is a must for all to hear and see.

Oh Tina, I've thought about her all day...I just don't have any words. Maybe I'm still in shock at what I've seen and heard.

i truly hope that every pain and agony that poor little dog suffered, is inflicted 10 fold upon who allowed/did it. there is a special place in Hell for those people, and may they go there soon!

Yes, I also hope LA County will prosecute the owner. There is no excuse for any animal to be in such condition. I would also like to see such owners prohibited from legally owning any animal again.

Thanks, Tina & crew, for giving this little puggie the gifts of love and peace she had been denied for so long. I know you don't "give up" easily, and you made exactly the right choice for this little pup.

This was one of the most horrendous acts to an animal I have ever seen. I cried when I saw the pic and I read your story..I know the part of deciding to send her to the bridge was hard, but it seems best for her. I pray that there were charges filed against the owner, how could anyone ever in this world let an animal get into this condition..I think you should contact Nancy Grace CNN.com and have her air this and she would get justice..I love my dogs and this is just far beyond what should ever happen to a poor defenseless little pug..I am praying and I do want to say you are the best for getting involved and trying to save her .. God bless each and every volunteer, they go through terribe trauma trying to save our precious little animals Debbie Inks Charleston ,Oregon

How can someone do something like this, to an animal! I had tears in my eyes when I read this story. I hope that owner feels pain someday and no does anything to help them. I am very glad this was put up. I recently just put my 12 yrs to sleep this week, I bet he was waiting for this wonderful pug.

Unbelievable. And so disturbing to know that there are people capable of letting this happen. I pray that whoever is responsible for this poor, little Puggie is made to pay for all her pain & suffering. Run free little Chachis!

You have to do whatever you can to get whoever did this to poor Chachis prosecuted and let us all know how we can help!!!

This is too disturbing to look at! Even more pitiful...this is just one example of animal abuse in the world. It's networking through outlets such as Pugs 'n Pals that raises awareness and creates action. Keep up the good deeds. Praying that Chachis is in a happy place free of abuse.

It is sad that the dog was in so much pain. As beings capable of reason we carry a certain responsibility for these sorts of animals. But let us not forget that every day 3900 children die of dehydration. The suffering we see everyday should remind us of how terribly we treat not only animals but also each other.

I, along with my partner Kerry, run the Minnesota Division of Midwest Pug Rescue. We have seen some pretty horrendous things in this business, but I have to say this is the worst we have come across. Blessings to you for having the heart to give this little precious pug her wings to fly pain free and happy. I know how difficult it is to follow through on that decision - it hurts, but at the same time strengthens our resolve to do whatever it takes to save those that we can and work towards getting laws that will better protect the helpless. This story has been posted on our local boards and I personally have sent it out to a pretty big e-mail list. It is a very hard read, but very important to show the public the cruelty that really goes on and how we need everyones support to end it.

To say these people are monsters is putting it mildly. They are not human. It makes me sick and I see that poor little animal's face everyday. I pray to God something beyond horrible happens to them. God Bless Joe for picking her up. I can only imagine the horror he must have felt. Like my dad use to say "people are no damn good" and this is the perfect case.
At least at the end, she was surrounded by love and comfort.

I am absolutely paralyzed with shock and anguish for this baby. This is not the first time I looked upon her little face. However, I am no stronger today than I was a week ago feeling I just couldn't function on the most basic of levels to respond. But now I have to...

To think "Satan" masquerades as a pug owner! This tiny life lifted from the safety of its mother only to land in the grip of such evil. Ya, eyes are the window to the soul for most... but the soulless pit of HELL in this homicidal sociopath's case.

When my time comes I know who I'm haunting. Get Ready A-- H-- I'm just warming up.....

Rest in Peace tiny girl, your safe now.

oh, my heart is so heavy now... I have to keep fanning my face to keep from crying. I am at work right now, so I can't let the tears fall. God rest your little beautiful soul Chachis. I know you are the happiest little puggy now! I didn't even know you, but I love you.

Poor, poor little Chachis. How could anyone allow this little pug to go through so much pain and suffering. I cannot stop crying for her, but I know God has healed her completely & she's running free and loving every minute of it. She will be waiting at the bridge for Joe and you, Tina. God bless all of the people who volunteer to save the little animals. And, God bless you, Tina & Joe and the others who surrounded Chachis as she went to God.

May God Damn the people who did such horrible things to Chachis. I hope they burn in hell!

i can't even put into words how horrible people like the prior owners of Chachis are. I don't understand how ANYONE could EVER treat a dog like this? It makes me horribly upset, confused, sad,...

People do need to be aware of what does go on outside of everyone's happier dog/human lives.

We love what you all do! Keep it up! You are all amazing, gifted and loving people.

This is truly heartbreaking. I cannot believe someone would do this. I hope that I can contribute to rescuing pugs soon. you are all so amazing!!!!

I'm in tears over this....my pug is my baby and I treat her like gold. I can not understand how a human being could be so cruel to an animal. Chachis was a beautiful dog and deserved so much better and I'm happy she is in a place of peace and endless love! The painful truth is that this owner truly thought treating an animal this way was okay and I hope karma will play a role in showing this person what true torture is..how awful!!

I came upon your website and opened to your horrifying picture of beautiful Chachis. I will never understand where such uncaring, self-centered people like Chachis family are coming from. Why was Chachis allowed to get to this terrible state? And if they were so uncaring, why take the time to drop her off at a shelter? People's actions confuse me.

My husband and I were blessed with our first Pug 25 years ago. Hard to imagine life without a Pug...our Family. Thank you for your organization.

I am thankful everyday for wonderful, unselfish, caring people that will go to great lengths to ensure the safety and well-being of animals - and especially in the name of the pug. I hesistated reading Chachis story but was obliged as a dutiful pug lover and loved by two pugs of my own. Dear, sweet Chachis is eternally romping along side other pugs, rolling in the grass and getting unlimited belly rubs on her full pink plump round belly. As for the person(s) that were suppose to have cared for her... I hope they were not allowed to just get away with it - people need to know that they cannot treat animals poorly and dump them at the shelter without any recourse. At times like this, it is when I must believe that they will get their's... because you cannot be so cruel and heartless and not suffer some sort of pain and misery. I prefer torment and agony but will settle for hardship. Forgive me for my unkind thoughts... but the severity of Chachi's circumstance did not have to go for as long as it did. They could have done something about it much much sooner... but they chose not to. For that, I have no room in my heart for what becomes of them.

I can only hope that the person who did this to Chachis is fully prosecuted. My husband, daughter, and I had 5 rescued pugs from P'n'P over the years. They brought such joy to our lives. Spanky, 3, the baby, left us after 9 months due to cancer, and abuse he suffered before he joined our family. Chang, nearly blind, 14, and Tuffy,8, blind, just came for a couple of weeks, but stayed for years, till they passed on six months apart. They had been rescued from a cage in a garage where they lived with about 18 dogs. Our sweet Keri, 14, and Tigger,13, dumped in different shelters the same day, both passed on around the time my husband died last year. Keri had been so over bred, her nipples dragged on the ground. I think Keri missed my husband and Tigger missed his long time companion. They were endlessly loving and a joy in our lives. They were spoiled, loved, and cared for with us. I can only hope it made up for the abuse that they suffered before joining us. I am looking forward to the future and another little sweet pug face to join our family. K. Emery

This is heartbreaking! Is there any update on whether the owner was prosecuted. How could they have ever let her get to this point?? I can't even imagine how horrible she must have felt by the time you guys got her. I really hope the owner pays the price for this!

Thank you for being merciful and having her humanely euthanized. She had suffered so much. I cried like a baby when I saw this photo and read her story and it still brings tears to my eyes months later. Its a haunting photo and story and a reminder of just how awful some people can be. Thank you and your volunteers for the love you showed her in her last hours. I will never forget her.

It's August and I just now saw this story about sweet little Chachis. When I first saw her pitiful little face, my first thought was that P & P saved her, that there would be a happy ending. I am heartbroken that is not the case but soooooo happy that little Chachis is no longer in torment... I know I'm preaching the the pug loving choir but people, please be vigiliant regarding how you see your neighbors, strangers, even your loved ones treat animals. Abusing an animal is JUST AS BAD as abusing a human baby because they are defenseless and cannot tell anyone they need help and they have JUST AS MUCH RIGHT to live in peace as people do. Maybe moreso, because they are dependent upon us humans to make decisions to protect them. If you see an animal being mistreated, do WHATEVER YOU CAN, whatever is needed to save it. Thank you to all the volunteers who help redeem humanity by helping animals. My dog is a Japanese Chin from rescue and she is my world. I would protect her with my life if I had to. She is all about love, and she and the other animals we share this earth with deserve our compassion.

I am in tears over this story. I cannot believe what some people will do to their animals. It makes me realize how sick people can be. But the fact that there are good people out there, trying to get justice is comforting. Nobody should be allowed to treat an innocent animal this way. For ANY reason. It makes me sick inside knowing that this is just ONE of the many tragic stories. And that so many of the abused dogs in the world havent been found.

I want to take in every dog I see on the adoption sites. It makes me sad knowing I can only take one home.

Lee Ann said...

Why, why, why. Why do people take animals if they have no intention to take care of them?

That owner needed prosecution and should never be allowed to have another animal, ever.

Oh this was horrific to read. I am so so sorry for Chachi, and for the others who have to live in the same conditions she did.

You are right, it is hard to post and for people to read about, but this is what happens, and sometimes we just can't save them, or they come to us too late. I can't even imagine the heartbreak everyone who met her went through. I am glad she is out of pain now.

What was done to that poor pooch should be done to the owner(s). Very sad to see anything in such a condition.

This is so horrible! People who treat their animals like this should go to jail. I could never imagine any of my babies like this. The way we treat our animals, environment and elderly show what kind of society we live in.......
